Entering port

My illustration for the story in the print version on the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan's in-house magazine about the first British ship to arrive in Japan. That start of official relations was 400 years ago this year. The ship left Japan with a cargo that included shunga – erotic pictures – that were seized and publicly burnt when the ship docked back in England. Hence the approach of my illustration. The British Museum is celebrating the anniversary with a display of shunga. The museum also has recently purchased an interesting scroll about the later arrival of Admiral Perry in Japan
