Two years on

The in-house magazine of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan is themed on the second anniversary of the Tohoku disasters. We covered it without images of the destruction itself, only images of change – plus a cover image from an 1896 magazine report about the tsunami of the time in the same area. We went with the theme "back to the future" because we cover the changes as the Tohoku area both returns to moving forward and thinks anew of its future – and because we look back at what happened and what lessons we can learn. Articles include an interview with two Japanese journalists critical of the domestic TV coverage of the nuclear accident at the time, The Economist's Henry Tricks on the return of a dance festival from a destroyed village, and photographs of people locating their creative businesses in the Fukushima area.
