Tattoo you

The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan's magazine, Number 1 Shimbun, with my photos and layouts of Horiyoshi III's tattoo work is out. The bodies and artwork were, of course, pretty amazing – so we could think of no reason not to go with them so prominently and laid bare in the design. The cover, meanwhile, treated the tattoo master's serious art light-heartedly, with the journalist, Julian Ryall, pretending to be tattooed by Horiyoshi himself. I photoshopped in the FCCJ logo, and left Horiyoshi's real creations, and the talent that justly makes him world renown, for the inside pages. (Detailed creations like the one below – on ex-school teacher, Yoshiaki Asada, who was back in Japan fresh from winning a whole-body tattoo award in New York.)
